Campus Achievements 2004 - 2006
Note: This page is provided as a way to highlight the progress the University has made toward a more energy efficient campus. These achievements are not related to the Climate Change Institute.

Academic / Research / Mechanical / Lighting / Controls

  1. steam trap survey, inventory and repair
  2. steam infrastructure upgrades
  3. lighting upgrades
  4. improved control of heating and ventilation systems in academic buildings for increased efficiency.

Transportation

  1. six new hybrid vehivles added to the university fleet
  2. encouraging carpooling by establishing dedicated campus carpool staions
  3. increase in the University sponsored bus service (BAT bus) with Bango Area Transportation to provide service for students, faculty and staff.
  4. increase use of interactive video for teleconferencing to reduce travel and save energy
  5. working on alternative transportation options to reduce vehicular traffic on and to campus.

Energy Purchases

  1. ENERGY STAR purchases required campuswide
  2. plans underway to bring on cogeneration facility in three years resulting in significant long term energy savings and reductions in greenhouse gases.

Residence Halls

  1. installation of over 200 electric timers to replace light switches
  2. installation of heating controls in 4 residence halls.  These controls enable students to control their heat from 55 – 72 degrees in their individual rooms, to prevent over heating and adjustment of temperature by opening windows.
  3. installation of energy efficient light bulbs in over 800 resident rooms
  4. installation of motion sensors in dorm room hallways
  5. installation of low flow shower fixtures in 5 residence halls. These fixtures reduce water usage by 30,000 gallons per building per day.
  6. winterization upgrades to University Park family housing
